SACS OBU History
Founded in 1907, the SACS Old Boys Union has a profound history that spans generations. It traces its roots back to the inception of SACS, which was established in 1829 as one of South Africa’s oldest educational institutions. The Union and alumni of SACS have played a significant role in the development of the school. Examples of this are the Hofmeyr Hall, Memorial Fields, Brodie Room, Provision of bursaries, SACS Green Energy, Pool heating and the Brewery Hockey field hockey ‘dugout’.
Throughout the Union’s existence, it has remained steadfast in its dedication to upholding the school’s values and nurturing a strong sense of belonging among its alumni.
Our Purpose
Since its establishment, the purpose of the OBU has been to align with and promote the interests of the schools, provide opportunities for alumni to connect and build the SACS community. More recently, these aims have evolved to mobilise the S.A.C (The SACS Alumni Community – made up of Old Boys, teachers, parents and supporters of the school who share a common bond forged through their SACS experience) by providing a platform for social and professional interaction. The Union aims to foster lifelong connections, mentorship opportunities, and a spirit of giving back to the SACS community.
With this in mind the OBU has formed the SACS Ithuba Trust as a vehicle to raise money to provide deserving young men an opportunity to attend SACS who would not otherwise have been able to do so. Its sole purpose is to provide bursaries and financial assistance to boys, thereby enhancing and upholding the dignity of pupils enrolled at SACS whose families find themselves in marginalised or financially disadvantaged positions. The funds are crowd-funded across different year groups, donated by individual and corporate donors and raised at the yearly Legacy Dinner.
The SACS Ithuba Trust is a recognised Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) set out in terms of S30 of the Income Tax Act and donations made to the trust are tax deductible in the hands of donors as per S18A of the Act. In additional the Trust qualifies as a Level 1 B-BBEE organisation and any corporates who make donations to the Trust will qualify for B-BBEE points towards their scorecards under the Socio-Economic Development element.
